We Have To Do Better!
Many of my blogs and white papers have focused on the relatively poor health outcomes in the U.S. I came across the following graphic which does a good job of tying it all together. Hedge fund manager Ray Dalio created a health index based on nine factors including, among others, life expectancy, child mortality, air pollution, the availability of basic sanitation, the homicide rate, and access to essential health care services. He then ranked twenty-four major countries as depicted below. One important caveat is that this is only one of many different approaches to evaluating health outcomes so I would characterize it as indicative but not definitive. The U.S. ranks fourteenth which is particularly discouraging given that we spend roughly twice as much per capita on healthcare as the average industrialized country.
