Those of us of a certain age have a sense that contemporary life is very different from the America of our youth, but it is not always easy to quantify the changes. The following graphic provides one snapshot of the major shifts in family structure and living arrangements.
Note the significant increase in the percentages of single parents, those living alone, and “other.” The corresponding decrease in married parents shows just how much domestic life has changed over sixty years. For a little intellectual stimulation, try to figure out what these changes mean for the economy, various industries, and politics!
