The year 2025 marked the first time that renewable energy passed coal as the largest source of global electricity generation. Clean energy sources accounted for 100% of new electricity demand during the year with solar representing 75% of that growth.
Usage of coal peaked in 1904 at 63.2% before declining to 35% by 1975. Since that time, there have been small annual decreases to the current level of 33%. From roughly 17% in 2000, nuclear power use declined to 8.9% today reflecting aging reactors and minimal new construction. However, due to improved safety and reliability as well as the development of smaller scale reactors, this source is expected to enjoy a significant revival in coming years. Finally, it is important to point out that total fossil fuel usage (coal, gas, and other) still accounts for 57.4% of electricity generation. Moreover, given that transportation is more than 90% dependent on oil and gas, fossil fuels represent about 80% of total energy consumption globally.
