I have written two white papers and a number of blog posts focused on the likelihood that technology in general, and artificial intelligence in particular, will soon replace a large number of jobs. That possibility has not really been of short-term concern because of the large number of unfilled jobs and very low unemployment rate. However, IBM just announced that it would cease hiring for roles it thinks could be replaced by artificial intelligence in the coming years. The focus will initially be on back-office functions, and the company estimates that 30% of the 26,000 employees in this category, or 7,800 jobs, may disappear.
Coincidentally, Visual Capitalist published an article the same day focused on the jobs most likely to be impacted by ChatGPT. Here is a sampling of some of the jobs they deem most and least at risk for disruption.
